FAQ

Why do I write mainly for Piano?

I write for Piano for practical reasons  – sadly I don’t have an orchestra to hand like Haydn and Vivaldi. Indeed, I have found that writing for Piano means that I can get really good at it as I can try out my ideas. Most of my compositions start with improvisations.  Indeed, I look at the tonal colour of a Piano as bit like black ad white photography.

How long have you been composing music?

From an early teenage years when I messed around on an electronic organ at home. I wrote a few christian songs in my thirties but didn't start composing seriously until my fifties!

Who is your favourite composer?

This is a hard one and I go through phases of listening to different composers. I think Mozart overall is the composer that brings me the most pleasure

Do you listen to any other music other than classical?

Yes. I've listened to a fair amount of popular music and Jazz. I don't like rap but can appreciate heavy metal - for short periods!

Who was the greatest composer?

This is a difficult question but I have to say c that the obvious candidate was Beethoven. The reason is that there was no other composer that had the breadth and brilliance of Beethoven. He was a true musical revolutionary - and all this mainly when he was deaf. For example, just in the areas of the symphony and string quartet he developed them both to such an extent it took a few years for anyone else to catch up!

What kind of Piano do you play?

I play a Nord Piano 3

What software you use to notate and record music?

I use Logic X to record the music on a Mac and Finale to notate.
