About Karen:

I love to celebrate birthdays because its all about color and happy and fun. When I was little, like every little one, I would get lots of crayons and paints and paper. I loved to color with crayons and paint. But when others went off into different directions, I stayed with my colours and paints, paper and pencils. My friends would go off on a Friday night partying, and I would stay home and draw and sketch, not to say I didn’t like to party, I did! But I loved to draw and sketch more. 

Unfortunately, I had a lot of critics in my life that discouraged me from doing my art so I laid it all down and got married and had kids. I loved doing that and was creative with them in some way. I used to call them my sculptures! However, I still was in search of that creative thing I could get my hands in to. 

Finally, my life changed drastically so, I went back to school to finish my degree in graphic design. Now, this is where I got so excited about art again. Something was missing though- the hand-held portion. In the class next door, they were always drawing, painting and sketching, erasing on paper while I was looking at a screen! I was longing to be in those classes, after all hands on finger painting was a childhood favourite. I finally graduated with a bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design-Kudos right? Well, to me not quite yet! I went right back to school to get a Masters in Illustration. Now I was in heaven! 

The other part of my story is I have always loved animals, especially dogs (and Giraffes for some reason.) So, I became an animal portrait artist. They all have such amazing personalities. I love trying new techniques with paints, stencils, stamps and new mediums. I like to mix media and try new combinations. There is a joy in creating and getting my hands into the mix. 

Okay lastly, but most importantly, I also walk in a strong faith. I am creative and believe so because I was created by a great creator. He guides me with delight in my art.  A lot of my work is from a picture I have in my head. When I walk in his creative nature, I get lots of ideas. Thus why my art is so colourful. There are endless colours in the universe and I like to keep my work bright because color makes me (and hopefully those who gaze upon my work) happy!

My newest thing lately is to let go and try abstract.
